Getting my audio setup going here in the Netherlands and had to buy some speaker wire. Just a reminder that the only thing that matters is the diameter of the wire vs the length of the run. Don’t fall for fancy marketing gimmicks and buy stupidly expensive wire! Here is the technical details if you wan to know why it won’t matter: http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

Shielding also matters as does the quality of the contacts on either end.
Ian, shielding doesn’t matter much for low impedance networks such as hone audio. Makes a little more difference for longer runs in commercial environments but still not much. Contacts are the biggest problem in most audio systems. Disparate metals and corrosion can increase resistance far more than average cable lengths or materials. Keep the contacts clean and the same metal for the best connection. Use some connection grease if the connection is going to be left for a while or in a humid environment.

But the guy at Best Buy told me that I need these gold-plated Monster cables and they would make my stereo sound more awesomer!

All fine and good, but when it comes to precision digital signals such as high-definition video, only the most shielded and expensive cables will do for me.
I totally agree with this post. It’s amazint what people spend money on. For HD video, it matters even less because the signal is digital, not analog. VGA does matter, though, for long runs, but who uses that any more.
I wish I could remember what the brand name was but I remember once finding online an HDMI cable marketed at audiophiles that was priced in the -thousands- of dollars. Various reviews talked about how much richer the sound was ect from them, neglecting to understand that beyond perfect bit for bit transmission there is no possible further improvement on a digital signal. Some days I wonder how much of the audiophile industry is knowingly going after suckers…

lol… I just remember some really absurd fabrication methods for this cable. I can’t remember exactly, but it was literally on the order of something like machined iridium male plug ends, diamond coated then nickle and gold plated. I just remember reading it thinking “how gullible ARE these people”. This was on Amazon.com with consumer reviews giving it great marks, supposedly from users who already had really good cables and upgraded. Thing is these cables weren’t even that long, something like 10′. They -weren’t- things like hybrid fiber optic HDMI cables for very long transmission ranges (100′ to over 1000′).
For Optimal sound quality you need to route channels in the floor of the room that extend from the amp to the speaker and fill them with molten gold.

Since you’re just settling down here, you’ll probably need all kind of wires and connectors. I’ve been using this site a lot: http://www.popelectronics.nl/, pretty good selection (at least for an amateur like me) and decent prices. And if you need some tools or an extra pair of hands and if it’s not far from The Hague, give me a shout.
