How to Securely Leave Twitter

Decided you aren’t going back to the #hatebird? Don’t delete your account, because after 30 days anyone can reregister your old handle and pretend to be you! In fact, they might even be able to have the verified blue checkmark as well for a reasonable $8/month.

Here is how to securely leave Twitter

  1. Go change your profile to state it is your #twittergravesite and optionally put your Mastodon address in the profile text as plain text. You can’t put your link to your actual Mastodon profile in the website box as Twitter claims it is “malware” (childish). However, if you have access to a URL redirection service, you can put that URL in and redirect to your profile, but you must have a 2 second delay to get around the block.
  2. Optionally – change your profile pic to this:
  3. If you care about your content, make sure to request an archive of your content and download it. It might take 24 – 48 hours for your archive to be ready to download.
  4. Recommended – Remove your posts and likes so that Twitter can’t benefit from it. Check out Tweet Delete to help you with this process.
  5. If you don’t have too many followers and aren’t following too many people, consider going through and unfollowing everyone and removing all your followers.  This could take a while, but it will really help people to understand that your account is no longer in use.  I’m working on a script to make this an automated process in the future.
  6. Regardless of if you get rid of your followers, you definitely want to go set your account to private.  This will hide everything from others, but more importantly, it prevents bots or others from following you moving forward.
  7. Now that you are sure you are done with your account, you need to make a decision…  Do you want to permanently say goodbye and never be able to come back, or do you want to tempt yourself with the chance to return?
    1. To permanently leave, go back to your account information, remove your phone number to prevent password recovery, and then use a disposable email service to change your email.  Lastly change your password to a long random string that you don’t save anywhere.
    2. If you want a change to come back, leave your phone number and email alone, but change your password to a long random string.  Then if you want to come back you’ll have to go through an account recovery process.  Hopefully, that’s enough to prevent you from backsliding.

That’s it!  Now when people come to your #twittergravesite they will see something like this:

The Tribute to Dallas Jackson

You might not know Dallas “The Hipster we hate to Love” Jackson but you should.  Dallas is an amazing person, and this page is a tribute to him.

Dallas has some amazing fashion sense.  Not that he particularly follows fashion in anyway.  Hello NO! Dallas just wears what he thinks is cool and doesn’t care what others think.  Despite this his combinations of interesting patterns and materials often ends up as a walking piece of art.  Although sometimes it might be hard to stop looking at his fashion the same way as a train wreck, more often then not it is pretty cool.

Dallas

Dallas is an accomplished Actor as well.  Here you can see him in a nice red and black checkered shirt on Portlandia in the Battle of the Gentle Bands episode.

Models in the Wilderness

This past weekend was an interesting experience as I got work with three different models up in the Mount Hood National Wilderness using my newly purchased Elinchrom Ranger portable studio flash system. While the focus was on getting experience with the new equipment and putting it through its paces there was definitely a fun element in setting up the concept for these shots.

The first setup was shot against a giant steel wheel from a abandoned chairlift and was shot using the 100cm Deep Octa modifier. I had thought that since I was shooting it without the diffuser panels in it that it would be a hard light similar to a silver beauty dish, but surprisingly it actually shot more like a white one. I decided to really go for the beauty look and put the gold reflector inside giving an amazing quality of light from something that is so portable.

The second shot was done

Southeast PDX Murals, Graffiti, and More

Murals are increasingly becoming a popular tactic for cleaning up graffiti covered areas of cities, but they have other impacts as well.  One of the earliest mural projects was started in 1984 in Philadelphia by Murals Arts.  Originally a government supported organization, the project took off and is now supported exclusively through volunteers and donations.  Their idea was simple, help to change the neighborhood’s graffiti problem by reaching out to the graffiti artists and encouraging them to engage in public art projects.  Over the decades their project was a massive success but not just because of the art being produced, but in the process, the way, that the art was produced.  By engaging the community in the creation of the murals, the murals became an important form of communication for the community to express themselves, their histories, and their dreams.

In Southeast Portland a similar project has been happening for a little over a decade now.  The Portland Street Art Alliance, is a group of artists, community members, property owners, and volunteers working to control graffiti and give local communities a voice.

For PSAA things all started with a banana and the phrase, “Art Fills the Void!”  One of the oldest murals in town is the “Art Fills the Void!” banana mural done by GorillaWallFlare in 1982. This mural of a giant banana was the later repainted by PSAA and it can still be seen today at SE12th Ave and Division St.

Certainly this mural has changed a wall frequently covered in graffiti into something else, but are murals always a successful anti-graffiti tactic?  Here is several murals all within a few blocks of each other that have had different success.

WP_20151102_16_32_23_ProThen just literally a few feet away, on the same retaining wall:

WP_20151102_16_32_00_ProClearly, this mural did not gain the respect of local graffiti artists and was vandalized. Or perhaps they felt they enhanced it?  Strangely, just another few feet away on the same wall we see a mural that has only recently been defaced.  Was this piece more compelling and thus avoided the fate of the other wall?  Was the first one so compelling and resonated with the local graffiti artists that they left them alone?

WP_20151102_16_31_39_ProWe may never know, but at least at this location, and on this retaining wall, it seems that the murals didn’t help to reduce graffiti.  One might also quickly point to the Broken Windows Theory, when you step back and see that the sidewalk in front of these walls is now being used for camping by the homeless.  It certainly appears that the more graffiti covered walls are where people are camping, or more graffiti is happening where people are camping?

WP_20151102_16_34_50_ProAlong the walls of Chapman Square Park a long mural was done to replace the graffiti.  This park is one that is nearly always occupied by homeless persons, and here again we see the effectiveness of murals stopping graffiti being questionable:

Sometimes graffiti and street art are hard to tell apart, as is the case in this recent addition to the approach of the new Tillicum Bridge.  Once again, there was a person camping in a tent just next to this location.

WP_20151102_16_41_19_ProHere is a mural done for the Japanese Auto Repair business near SE Taylor and SE 8th Ave.  This commissioned piece shows how murals can help to not only beautify a building and discourage graffiti but also help to be a communication tool.  In this piece we see a tsunami destroying a boat, a likely reference to Japanese culture, and connection to the business.

WP_20151102_16_54_45_ProThe United Loans building has a huge United States flag painted on the side of it.

WP_20151102_17_27_23_ProHere a local business named “Farm” has a mural painted on their wall:

WP_20151102_17_30_13_ProMurals aren’t new, and were original painted on buildings for signage and advertising.  As modern billboards took over in speed and cost, these murals declined in use.  However, the trendiness of murals has seen at least one local advertising company bringing the concept back.  Ironically, they have taken up space immediately adjacent to Farm’s mural:

A quick word about speaker wire.

Getting my audio setup going here in the Netherlands and had to buy some speaker wire.  Just a reminder that the only thing that matters is the diameter of the wire vs the length of the run.  Don’t fall for fancy marketing gimmicks and buy stupidly expensive wire!  Here is the technical details if you wan to know why it won’t matter: http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm

Wall Street Journal article complaining about new tax increases on "families"

So the WSJ is actually publishing an article complaining about how the taxes that got increased actually apply to more than the wealthiest 1%.  Specifically they are complaining about several increases to “families” making $250,000+ and are actually making them out to be hidden:

“So, a couple with three children and adjusted gross income of $300,000 or more will lose some or all of their $19,500 exemption.”  [referring to exemptions per household member]

and

“The other new provision is a complex limitation on all itemized deductions—including charitable donations and mortgage interest—that will eliminate up to 80% of deductions for taxpayers above the $250,000/$300,000 income thresholds.”

Excuse me if I am supposed to be bothered by this…  If your AGI is more than $300,000 a year you aren’t really a “family” that is hurting at the moment.  Maybe they should look at the number of people that can barely make their mortgage or are working 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet?

Even worse then end with this:

The overall result is that, for many families, 2013 tax rates won’t be as advertised. While a retired couple with $180,000 of income and $25,000 of deductions could see no change in their federal tax next year, a single parent of two children earning $260,000 with $30,000 of deductions could see a $3,300 increase.

The way I see it that is EXACTLY how it should be working out and that $3,300 increase is negligible to that single parent.  Seems like much whining for nothing.

eBook reader and 1 – 3 book recommendations by me and you

If your friend just got an eBook reader and were going to recommend 1 – 3 books on it. Which books would you recommend and why? I will start:

1) The Art of Happiness (Riverhead, 1998, ISBN 1-57322-111-2) No other book has made such a powerful impact on myself and others. Even if you don’t believe in any of the beliefs of Buddhism you should read this book. Combining the thoughts of western medicine and the words of the Dalai Lama, this book asks powerful questions, and makes you think harder about the important parts of life and your relationship to others. I am working my way through the book for yet another time and encourage others to read it at least once if not repeatedly through your life.

2) Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell (available legally online if you search as it is out of copyright in many countries now) Classic tail of a future dystopia where the people are controlled and oppressed by the government. Many parallels can be made to our present society and this scary and upsetting novel. Everyone should read this book to help to encourage society from slipping down this slope. Particularly upsetting to me are a) revisionist history, b) telescreens/universal surveillance, and c) constant (false) war to induce a fear based control and drive the economies.

3) The Bible (King James Edition, again freely available online)  It doesn’t matter if you believe in the teachings of Christ or even if you think he was a real person or not.  This book has arguably had more impact on the world then any other.  It would be ridiculous for anyone that considers themselves to have any sort of academic status to not have read this text.  If nothing else this book (written by many over centuries) consists of some of the most interesting tales of the human experience.  War, jealousy, love, friendship, governments, rebels, peace, and the promise of a better life today and after death is contained in this literary work.  I won’t go into discussion on if the events in the bible are historically accurate or not (although much research finds more truth than fiction) because it doesn’t really matter.  The stories in this book are interesting, meaningful, and have literary value on their own.  If you can read just one story out of this I would suggest the book of Job.  In this tale of a spiteful god, testing his worshiper, you can find the subtext of acceptance of the sorrows of life, being happy with what joys you already have, and with treating life with a persistence that it takes to survive.  Again, It doesn’t matter if the story is true, if you believe in a god, or Satan, it is the moral of the story that carries the weight and makes it iconic.  Ironically, it is when you start to study other religions where the bible becomes most interesting.  The teachings of the bible are not unique and closely mirror those of other religions.  If the followers of so many of the profits were to actually compare the teachings they would find that they have more in common than different.  So next time you are stuck in a hotel for a night.  Pick it up, and read a tale, and if you have to pick some place, start with the story of Job.  It is a quick read, although the whole book might take you a while.   [PS- If you find the romantic English of the King James version tough to follow, look for a copy of a “living bible” which uses more common everyday language.  However, take note that you will be loosing some of what makes this text a literary work of art.]

I’m moving to the Netherlands NOT Holland!

While a few people seem to know the difference, I am a bit confused as to why some people keep thinking I am moving to Holland.  Perhaps this video will help to avoid the confusion, or maybe just add to it.

A Message by George Carlin

There a great number of people that have had wise words and insights over the years.  Besides prominent leaders such as the religious figures, politicians, and philosophers, there are creative artists that are able to craft their words and share equally powerful thoughts and ideas.  The problem is that often their words are not heard as they lack the prominence of the others.  Occasionally, one gets around this problem by becoming famous.  George Carlin was one of these people, and yet his writings are often overlooked by people who only remember him for his (outstanding) comedy.  I now share with you, one of his writings.

Compassionate Critters

In a recent study, psychologists sought to find out if a rat would assist another rat that was trapped in a confined box.  They tested it in various situations including ones where the rats were not united after being freed.  They found that the the rescue would be done quickly regardless of the reward.  They also found that, when the savior was given chocolate pieces, the saving rat would keep at least one piece of chocolate around for the rescued rat.

The conclusion?  Rats are empathetic and that there is reward in doing good things.
